Our First Year

What follows is a letter from our Foundation co-Founder and Drew's dad, Kevin Poet. We are very appreciative of all of the support and kind words over the past year and especially in recent weeks as we come to the end of our first year as a Foundation. We couldn't fulfill Drew's wishes without your support and generosity.

Dear Friends and Benefactors,

It has been a year since our beloved Drew passed away. Some days it feels like yesterday and others it feels like a lifetime ago since we were able to hug and kiss our boy. We will never forget this amazing young man and continue the Drew Poet Foundation in his honor. We continue to do our best to honor Drew’s wishes:

  • Please don’t be sad.

  • Do what you can to find treatment and ultimately a cure for this disease.

During the first year of the Foundation you have all helped us on this journey. Your love and support is appreciated beyond measure, know that every note, text, card, call or thought is helping all of us move forward. Thank You.

The Foundation and all of its supporters have been very busy this past year. So many people from all over the country and the world have reached out and given their assistance, and we are incredibly grateful. Many successful fundraising events were organized including:

  • Charity Day at Charlotte Catholic High School

  • Salem Volleyball Charity Night vs. Canton

  • Inaugural Drew Poet Foundation Golf Outing in Rancho Palos Verdes, California

  • Restaurant Dine to Donate Series in Plymouth, Michigan hosted by Compari's, Fiama Grill, and the Sardine Room

  • Fundraising and activity booth at South Lyon Pumpkinfest

  • The Plymouth Canton Steelers honored Drew by retiring his number and holding several fundraisers throughout a year dedicated to his memory

  • Several personal fundraising events generated generous contributions in Drew's name

On behalf of the Poet Family, the Drew Poet Foundation Board of Directors, and all our family and friends we want to sincerely thank all of you for your support. Although the current situation with COVID-19 has put our activities temporarily on hold, once the time is right we will resume our efforts and hope you will join us. In the meantime please keep yourselves and your families safe, and follow public health guidelines as it will help save many lives; especially those people experiencing a fight like Drew's.

As we look back on this first year, we are still hurting from our loss, but also very proud of what has been accomplished. We look forward to the next year, and all the years to come. We hope that you'll continue to join us in our mission of spreading awareness, funding research, and finally finding a cure.
